Chile Blueberries

Blueberries are often at the top of the list for healthy diets and foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants.  The fresh blueberries we enjoy today come from outside of North America for half the year.  The North American high-bush blueberry harvest season takes place from April through October.  Farmers in South America begin harvesting blueberries right as the North American season winds down.  To keep menus fresh and interesting year-round, chefs count on shipments of South American blueberries.

Chile is in the lead when it comes to in providing a consistent supply of fresh blueberries of the highest quality and safety.  Chile produced 81% of all Southern Hemisphere blueberries in 2014, far ahead of Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Uruguay.  Currently, Chile is ranked as the largest producer of farm-grown blueberries in the Southern Hemisphere and second largest in the world.

Chile is naturally protected from agricultural pests and is considered to be a “good phytosanitary island” because of its natural barriers, such as the Atacama Desert in the North, the Pacific Ocean to the West, the Andes Mountains to the East, and the frozen expanse of the Antarctic to the South.  Chile has excellent soil conditions, climate, and water.  These conditions also make Chile Blueberries more than welcome in fruit and food-service industry.

Winn Universal's direct supply from Chile growers adds even more satisfaction towards the hearts of both Chinese and American consumers.

Storage of Blueberries:

Storage

  • It is best to keep blueberries in cold storage. The best temperature is 32° F (0° C), ideally constant from time of picking, with a relative humidity of 90%.

  • Blueberries are more easily harmed than raspberries and strawberries.

  • Keep the fruit dry, and never store berries near meat or milk products, as the berries absorb these taints.

Display of Blueberries:

Display

  • Fruit should be well formed, dry, firm and uniformly of the same color.

  • Blueberries have a purplish-blue color to a blackish-blue color, with a silver gray hue in the darkest sections.

  • This is a typical characteristic of the fruit and is not a sign of poor quality.

  • If the fruit is displayed in cases or in paper cartons, any evidence of juice may suggest the fruit is over-ripe.

  • Any damaged fruit should be removed after a daily quality check.

  • The berries should be kept in the delivery carton.

  • Display shelves should be kept clean and dry.
